How do I get to Procida and Ischia?

Many of our kayaking, boating and SUP (Stand Up Paddling) adventures take place on the islands of Procida and Ischia.  So how do you get there?  It depends on where you are coming from, if you have a car and how flexible your schedule is.  Below are your options.

FERRY: To arrive at Procida or Ischia, you can depart by ferry (‘traghetto’ in Italian) from either the port of Naples or the port in Pozzuoli.  (If you are coming from the Amalfi Coast, there are ferries to Naples from Sorrento, Amalfi and Positano. There is also train service from Sorrento and Salerno) Both the port of Pozzuoli and the port of Naples have train service to/from the port and paid overnight parking available.  Parking is always more difficult in prime summer months, but generally available.  Ferries also allow you to pay and take your vehicle to the islands in off season only.  In prime season, only vehicles from those who live on the islands are allowed. (Note: the streets are narrow, one way and steep and a bit crazy IMHO on the islands and I would not take my own car.) Traghetti to Procida only go to the main port and Traghetti to Ischia  either go to Ischia Porto or Casamicciola Terme.  Traghetti differ in price based on their speed. Note travel times and destinations when you buy.  Also note that the different traghetti (Caremar and Gestur) have different locations at the port in Pozzuoli for buying tickets.

Ferry Hours:  Traghetti – Procida,  Traghetti – Ischia

WATER TAXI: You can take a water taxi from Monte Di Procida, but need a car to get to the marina at Aquamorta.  Parking is easy. This is my preference because you can schedule a water taxi anytime (daylight hours) you want and they will drop you off at various places on the island. Parking is less expensive at Acquamorta and the water taxi is a few € per person cheaper as well.  Mediterraneo has a small building at the port Aquamorta and will provide round trip service to/from the islands. Once you arrive on the islands, you have a choice of bus service or taxis. Buses can be very crowded in summer months and do not have air conditioning. Depending on if you are traveling on a budget or can afford a €15 taxi fare, your options provide different levels of comfort.  That said, taking an ape taxi (3 wheeled tiny truck) can be quite the experience.  If you opt for the water taxi, you may not need land transportation at all as they will drop you off at your destination.

SUP Positano, Praiano and Amalfi

Windsurf Praiano, located at the Marina di Praia is now listing SUPs for rent by the hour or 3 hrs at a time available at Positano, Praiano and Amalfi.  The Amalfi Coast is best seen from the water.  Get out and SUP!  Do pay attention to the water currents and waves.  The choppiest water I’ve ever SUP’d on was in Positano.  But it does have calm times!

SUP Paddleboard from Miseno to Baia Castle

We took our SUPs (Stand Up Paddleboards) out to my favorite local place to get in a paddleboard this morning.  We arrived early around 7:45am to beat beach traffic, but found out the local parking lots don’t open until 8:30am.  In July and August, 8:30am is too late to get on the water as the boat traffic starts getting heavy.  So we found street parking. Remember to pay for street parking by buying a parking biglietto at the local bar/cafe. It cost 2 euro/hour this morning. Continue reading SUP Paddleboard from Miseno to Baia Castle

SUP Tour Amalfi Coast – Cetara to Erchie

This is the second time I’ve done a SUP (Stand Up Paddling) tour with this company and it is one of my favorites.  The water has been very calm both times and the views are amazing.  They launch from Hotel Cetus (parking is at the hotel) near Cetara and have 2 options to go towards the beach in Vietri or to go around the cape past Erchie.  Both directions take 2 hours are amazingly awesome.  The trip to and from Vietri is a bit easier as you’re more protected and the water is generally calmer.  In the afternoons, the wind picks up near Cetara.  Morning tours are best.  The guides carry insurance, follow along in a boat and take pictures.  The company provides the SUP boards, paddles, life jackets and safety leashes.  Great experience.  I’ve been talking to them about rates, so if you’d like to book, mention me (Julie) when you email or call Giusy for better rates or contact me and I’ll help you schedule a tour.  They do provide a guide that can give instructions.  Amazing and a MUST DO!  Minimum 2 people, maximum 5 people.  Rates vary from €45-55 per person, depending on number in group. Where to buy a SUP nearby?

Looking to buy a new SUP?  I’ve compiled a list of stores below I’ve found online that advertise selling SUPs.  However, I haven’t visited them yet.  If you want NEW, I’d call first and see what they have in stock before making the drive.  If you are looking for USED, keep an eye out on subito.it.  It’s like craigslist for Italy and as I write this post, there are 4-5 boards for sale in the 400-500 euro range near Rome.  I watched for a few months and found a great used board for 400 euro.    Before this, I ordered an inflatable off of Amazon and after trying it out a few times, I returned it.  It just wasn’t the same to me.  If you find a store that you recommend, let me know and I’ll add it to the list below.
